About

Beyond Bullets is DCTV's media campaign to increase awareness about our nation's gun violence epidemic and how it impacts communities, and to draw attention to the people who are working to prevent violence across the country against great odds.

In 2005, two teenage filmmakers named Terrence Fisher and Daniel Howard alerted DCTV to the epidemic of gun violence through their film, "Bullets in the Hood", which was produced through DCTV's PRO-TV program. DCTV decided that, after decades of war reporting overseas, it was time to report on the war at home. In 2009 we began planning this national media campaign with support from the Ford Foundation.

Beyond Bullets is focusing on New York City gun violence issues in 2010. We worked with six incredible journalists to make a series of short videos about gun violence throughout the city. Our NYC videos were all shot by the following people: Jessie Auritt, Hemamset Angaza, Hena Ashraf,Kat Keene Hogue, Gilberto Francisco and Negesti Cantave.

We hope Beyond Bullets will fuel an ongoing national discussion about gun violence in the United States and encourage more people to get involved with this issue. The idea of hosting short documentaries on our website will give the public an opportunity to learn about the stories behind the statistics, and our national tour will bring these films directly into neighborhoods nationwide. Anyone can participate by uploading their own videos onto our site, and our events in each city will be open to the public.

You can do your part by educating yourself about how gun violence affects your community; getting involved with one of DCTV's partner organizations in your city; making your own videos and posting them on our site; taking political action; telling your friends to get involved; and simply reaching out to youth in your own neighborhood so that they don't feel alone.

Please get involved. We need mothers, fathers, peers, children, community leaders, city leaders, business owners, police officers and policymakers to think about this issue, and to work together to make a difference.
