Despite all the mitigating factors, if you decide to carry a gun, you are responsible for anything that happens with that gun. I don't know about you, but I wouldn't mess with Jules Winnfield.

It's hard to know how to begin writing about Friday's horrific tragedy in Norway. There's the absolute insanity of the shooter, Anders Behring Breivik. There are the American fundamentalist bloggers who supposedly influenced him.

We often work with New Yorkers Against Gun Violence, documenting their work, co-hosting events and working with their youth violence prevention program. You've probably seen our videos about their annual lobby day in Albany, when they bring NYC teens to the State Capitol to brief legislators about current gun bills which they believe would make communities safer.

Next Tuesday, May 17th, groups of teenagers from Washington Heights, Crown Heights and Harlem will be heading to Washington DC to lobby on Capitol Hill for stricter gun laws. They'll be advocating closing the Gun Show Loophole and banning high capacity magazines .

On Wednesday, April 27th Beyond Bullets took part in a screening at Maysles Cinema in Harlem. It was an honor to screen Bullets in the Hood at such an esteemed community space which was founded by renowned filmmaker Albert Maysles.

Violence Policy Center (VPC) released a study this week showing that household gun ownership in America has reached an all-time low. They site some reasons for the decline, including an aging population of gun enthusiasts and a lack of interest from youth; the end of our military draft; decreasing popularity of hunting; land use issues that limit hunting; and more single parent households led by women.

On Wednesday, April 27th at 7:30 PM The Maysles Cinema will present the Beyond Bullets: Gun Violence in America curated by Sylvia Savadjian. This event will feature three films on the topic of gun violence in America. The films include Living for 32 directed by Kevin Breslin, Bullets in the Hood: A Bed- Stuy Story, directed by Terrence Fisher and Daniel Howard, and A Harlem Mother directed by Ivana Todorovic.

We'd like to extend a huge congratulations to our partners at High School for Enterprise, Business & Technology in Bushwick, Brooklyn for their award-winning presentation, Guns in America. They won Third Place at the school's 2010 Humanities Fair last week. The presentation was thoroughly researched, creatively presented and the students spoke eloquently and passionately about the issue of guns in our country.

Tom Matlack, a venture capitalist-turned-writer, contributed an article to The Good Men Project Magazine about why guns are more synonymous with men than women. The piece was actually a compilation of public statements about guns, made by men and women - pro-gun, anti-gun and neutral - from across the country.

The collection of statements were revealing at worst and encouraging at best....
