When people start learning about gun violence in our country, they're often baffled that such a privileged, advanced nation would allow guns to infect our communities to the extent that they do, with barely any restriction. How has one institution gained so much power that they defeat a public majority who is in favor of stricter gun laws?

We were going to try to give our Colbert-posting a rest, but we couldn't resist posting this terrific episode from last night featuring our brilliant partner, Jackie Hilly, from New Yorkers Against Gun Violence.

I can't imagine it's easy to be a guest on Colbert's show, and Jackie was pitch perfect. Plus, Colbert's opening bit is ridiculously good. He nailed the gun debate once again.

Congratulations, Jackie and NYAGV!

Stephen Colbert is consistently our favorite commentator on gun issues in the United States. Sweet justice, Justice Sweetness.

This week the Supreme Court voted to uphold the 2nd Amendment on the state and local levels, extending the individual right to bear arms and limiting how local governments can tailor gun laws to better serve the needs of their constituents. As disappointing as Monday's decision was, at least there is still room within the 2nd Amendment for "reasonable restrictions". The small fraction of strident gun rights advocates who oppose any type of sensible legislation didn't get their way entirely....

The Supreme Court voted in favor of gun rights again, preventing state and local governments from making their own laws about gun possession. It's curious that the same people who vote in favor of this federal oversight of gun laws want the federal government out of their business when it comes to ANYTHING else. We've got some pretty confused, one-track minds out there when it comes to the 2nd Amendment.
