Beyond Bullets Receives Grant to Make Videos About Gun Violence in NYC |
Beyond Bullets has received a matching grant from The Knight Foundation and the New York Community Trust to film short documentaries about gun violence in 7 communities in New York City. DCTV was among 24 community foundations nationwide to receive a grant from The Knight Community Information Challenge for innovate projects that propose ground-breaking uses of new media and technology to keep residents informed and engaged in their respective communities. The grant will support Beyond Bullets' media campaign to illuminate the causes of and portray effective community solutions to gun violence in a way that traditional news media currently does not. Through this grant, Beyond Bullets is able to hire 3 youth reporters to create original media that will be posted on the website: www.beyondbullets.org. The youth reporters will film in the following communities in all five boroughs of New York City: Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brownsville, Harlem, Mott Haven, Jamaica, Stapleton, and Crown Heights. Following completion of the videos, the documentary series will be screened from the CyberCar at several locations throughout NYC to facilitate discussion among youth, community members, and city officials in order to work towards community solutions.
