Domestic Violence Bill Passes in Albany |

We often work with New Yorkers Against Gun Violence, documenting their work, co-hosting events and working with their youth violence prevention program. You've probably seen our videos about their annual lobby day in Albany, when they bring NYC teens to the State Capitol to brief legislators about current gun bills which they believe would make communities safer.

This work can seem like an uphill battle at times, but just yesterday they had a victory! A legislative priority of theirs passed with bi-partisan support to bring New York into compliance with existing federal law. The bill will force New York to upload the records of domestic violence criminals to the background check system.

Federal law bans criminals convicted of domestic violence misdemeanors from purchasing a firearm. Each state must upload its criminal records of these domestic violence misdemeanors to the federal background check system.

New York has uploaded ZERO records of misdemeanor domestic violence criminals to the background check system. Therefore abusers are free to arm themselves with deadly weapons. The bill passed yesterday will allow New York start uploading these records.
