A Philip Randolph High School Peace Mural |

Yesterday we visited A Philip Randolph High School while their students were making a peace mural. We're starting an ongoing program at A P Randolph to discuss gun violence and the making of healthy communities. You'll be reading their blogs and watching their videos over the next few months, so stay tuned.

The peace mural was one of the first events their Humanities department put on, and the students had a great time! We got letters from a few of the students describing their experiences. Here is one we got this morning from a young woman named Valentina:

Hi Stephanie,

On Tuesday September 27, 2011 was the Peace Mural at A Philip Randolph Campus High School, I had so much fun and surprisingly many people showed up. The mural was actually very pretty and I was happy because I had the first purple hand prints. Many adults at our school were really encouraging us to come and show support, My dean especially! It was originally at 3 but so many people were there we started a little late. They gathered us in two rooms, played a little music and explained to us what this peace mural was about. It was really fun because we didn't all know each other but we got along and had fun. They lined us up, they painted our hands different colors and we painted our hands on the wall! I feel this is important to me because it's like my hands, a part of me is on MY school and it represents how each of us play a part in our school to make this a safe and peaceful environment. I am very happy I participated.

The students at A P Randolph are smart, engaged and funny and we can't wait to read their blog posts this fall. We'll keep you posted!
