Responding to Harlem Gang Violence |
On June 30th there was a shooting in Harlem's Morningside Park, while teens were playing basketball and younger kids were playing on the playground. This was apparently the third shooting in a week in the area, and the brazenness of this shooting - at 7:00pm in a crowded public park with families all around - struck fear in parents from the neighborhood and spurned responses from the community.
We were contacted by one of those concerned mothers, who gave us information about ways the public can get involved with these new initiatives to prevent violence in Harlem. It starts with a community-wide meeting on Friday, July 29th at The Harlem Center, co-presented by the Police Athletic League, Harlem4Kids and Positive Presence for Peace.
All are welcome, and we encourage you to attend if you live in the area or just want to support their cause of non-violence. They welcome your ideas for violence prevention and your attention toward this issue.
