Steve James' Retrospective at Maysles Cinema |

Save the date(s) for Steve James' retrospective at the Maysles Cinema at the end of the month! This renowned documentary filmmaker will be in person on July 28th for a Q & A after his film No Crossover: The Trial of Allen Iverson.

Steve James creates documentaries that are intimate, touching portraits of characters who often represent much bigger issues in our society. The seminal Hoop Dreams followed two African-American basketball players who were recruited by a mostly white, suburban school to play for their team. The film followed their 90-minute commutes to and from school, and exposed the struggles between class and race which still very much exist in our country.

James's most recent film, The Interrupters, followed our friends at CeaseFire Chicago who work to prevent gun violence on the streets of Chicago. Major props to Ameena, Cobie and Eddie for sharing their stories, and for all the amazing work they do, along with all the other interrupters.

Put these dates in your calendars, because his films are not to be missed. For more information about the screenings, visit Maysles Cinema .
