Supreme Court Fails to be Progressive, Again | Washington D.C.
The Supreme Court voted in favor of gun rights again, preventing state and local governments from making their own laws about gun possession. It's curious that the same people who vote in favor of this federal oversight of gun laws want the federal government out of their business when it comes to ANYTHING else. We've got some pretty confused, one-track minds out there when it comes to the 2nd Amendment.
I don't understand whose rights the Supreme Court is upholding by interpreting the 2nd Amendment in such a rigid, simplistic way. Is all this controversy intended to support the tiny minority of gun owners who aren't in favor of progress or sensible gun laws? Why do we pay so much attention to this small fraction of our population when the large majority of gun owners are in favor of sensible gun laws? And why do we demolish the quality of life for entire communities, generation after generation, all across our country so that a relative handful of people can feel at ease about hoarding weapons?
Our Supreme Court has obviously not progressed as our country has, which is utterly disappointing.
Today's Supreme Court ruling makes all of us at Beyond Bullets very sad and frustrated. The voices of the people who are most affected by guns and gun violence are completely left out of this political conversation, and these are the voices that we hear everyday. The stories we hear are so pronounced and consistent that they seem impossible for any caring person to ignore. Yet as a country we are proving time and again that this single, outdated measure is more important than the welfare of our citizens, and the GUN wins again. Shame on us.
