Thank You Maysles Cinema! |
On Wednesday, April 27th Beyond Bullets took part in a screening at Maysles Cinema in Harlem. It was an honor to screen Bullets in the Hood at such an esteemed community space which was founded by renowned filmmaker Albert Maysles.
We were joined by our friends Colin Goddard of The Brady Campaign , co-founders of Harlem Mothers SAVE Jackie Rowe-Adams and Jean Corbett-Parker, and filmmaker Kevin Breslin . The Harlem community came out, including Iesha Sekou of Street Corner Resources, and mothers who have turned to Harlem Mothers SAVE to help with the grief associated with losing a child to gun violence.
Thanks to Sylvia Savadijan for putting together such a worthy program, too, including Living for 32 , Bullets in the Hood and A Harlem Mother . The three films were perfect complements of one another. And although the panel discussion was overshadowed by the tragic 10-year-anniversary of the death of Jean Corbett-Parker's only son, LaTraun Parker, we managed to have a production conversation about why this issue still plagues us year after year and what communities can do to put an end to it.
We hope we can be a part of more of these screenings in the future!
